It’s kind of hokey to say, but… They don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care!
Connect with your students early. When they arrive, introduce yourself and LEARN their name. If you have trouble remembering names, give them name tags. Share an experience or two from when you were in their seat. And as you stated, dont discredit their previous training or knowledge base!

Excellent read. My mentor taught me long ago that your students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. People will forget what you said. They will forget what you do. They will never forget how you make them feel. Positive reinforcement is the only way we do things at The Defensive Shooting Academy. Thanks for writing this article. I wish there were a standard in this industry. If there were, I know a lot of so called instructors out there that wouldn’t make the cut.
