The neuroscience of visual attention and why I spend nearly half my dry practice with the optic turned off.

In the first article, I admitted something I suspect thousands of veteran shooters experience but rarely talk about: I don’t remain perfectly target focused. Decades of shooting iron sights, age-related changes in vision, and a visual system naturally drawn to bright, moving objects all compete for my attention every time I present a pistol mounted optic (PMO). Understanding that was liberating, but it also led to an obvious question: If that’s how my brain naturally works, how do I retrain it?

For years, I assumed the answer was simply more repetitions with the dot turned on. If I practiced enough, eventually I would stop looking at the dot and remain target focused throughout the presentation and trigger press. That certainly helped, but eventually I realized something I hadn’t considered: every repetition teaches the brain something. The question isn’t whether you’re learning; the question is what you’re learning.

Your Brain Doesn’t Know You’re Shooting

The human visual system didn’t evolve to shoot pistols. It evolved to help us survive. Long before there were red dot sights, our brains were wired to recognize what moved, what changed, and what demanded our attention.

A pistol mounted optic checks every one of those boxes. It’s bright, highly contrasted, moves every time the pistol moves, and sits directly in the center of your visual field. Your brain doesn’t know it’s an aiming reference. It simply recognizes something visually significant and says, “Pay attention to that.”

This is known as attentional capture. Certain visual stimuli automatically draw our attention before we consciously decide what deserves it. It’s not necessarily a lack of discipline; it’s a normal feature of human vision.

The brain manages this competition through two complementary systems. The first is commonly described as bottom-up attention, which is driven by the environment. The second is top-down attention, which is directed by our intentions and goals. Bottom-up attention notices sudden movement, flashing lights, sharp contrast, and a brilliant red object floating in the center of our vision. We don’t necessarily choose to notice these things because their visual characteristics make them difficult to ignore.

Top-down attention allows us to deliberately select the information most relevant to the task. In this case, that information is the exact place on the target where we intend the bullet to land. The challenge with a pistol-mounted optic is these systems can compete against each other. Bottom-up attention says, “Look at the bright, moving object,” while top-down attention says, “Stay on target.”

The goal of training isn’t to eliminate bottom-up attention. That system is automatic and useful. The goal is to strengthen our ability to deliberately return attention to the target before performance is degraded. Once I understood that, I stopped criticizing myself every time I caught my attention drifting toward the dot and began asking a better question: How do I teach my brain that the target—not the dot—is the most important source of information?

Looking Isn’t the Same as Paying Attention

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding pistol-mounted optics is that seeing and paying attention are the same thing. They’re not. I think of vision in three layers: visual acuity, which determines whether I can physically see the target and the dot; visual focus, which describes the distance at which my eyes are focused; and visual attention, which determines where my brain is actually processing information.

A shooter can technically have the eyes focused at target distance while mentally inspecting the dot. The target may remain reasonably clear, but the shooter’s attention has shifted toward the movement, brightness, or position of the reticle. That’s the distinction many instructors overlook. The eyes may appear to be doing the right thing while the brain is doing something entirely different.

Once I understood that, I stopped thinking only about controlling my eyes and started training where I focused my attention. I also stopped believing success meant my attention could NEVER drift. A better measure of success is how quickly I recognize the shift, return my attention to the target, and continue without allowing the interruption to degrade the shot.

Every deliberate return to the target reinforces the behavior I want. The drift isn’t necessarily the failure. Failing to recognize and correct it is what creates the problem.

Every Repetition Reinforces Something

One of the principles I teach in every course is that performance doesn’t appear on demand; it’s programmed. The brain doesn’t judge repetitions. It stores them.

If every dry-practice repetition follows the sequence of finding the dot, centering the dot, and then pressing the trigger, eventually you’ve become exceptionally good at looking at the dot. That isn’t the habit I wanted to build. I wanted my attention to remain anchored on the target while allowing the dot to exist as a visual reference rather than as the focus of my attention.

Learning strengthens the neural pathways associated with the thoughts, perceptions, and actions we repeat. The more frequently we perform a particular sequence, the more efficient and automatic that sequence can become. That principle works in either direction.

If I repeatedly present the pistol, search for the dot, inspect its location, and then press the trigger, I strengthen that sequence. If I repeatedly identify a precise target location, present the pistol into my line of sight, and allow the dot to provide information without becoming the destination of my attention, I strengthen a different sequence. The brain doesn’t automatically separate productive habits from unproductive ones. It becomes more efficient at what we consistently ask it to do, and that realization changed the way I practice.

Why I Turn My Dot Off

Today, nearly half of my dry practice is performed with the optic powered off. At first glance, that seems backwards. Why would someone trying to become proficient with a red dot intentionally remove it? The answer is that I’m not trying to train the dot; I’m trying to train my brain.

When the optic is turned off, the window remains, but the competing visual stimulus is gone. There is no illuminated reticle demanding my attention and no temptation to inspect its movement, chase it around the window, or verify its position before pressing the trigger. All that’s left is the target.

This is a form of stimulus control. Rather than depending entirely on willpower to resist something that repeatedly captures attention, I temporarily remove that stimulus from the training environment. The dot is the competing stimulus. Turning it off simplifies the visual problem and allows me to rehearse the behavior I actually want to develop.

That forces me to answer a much more important question: Where is my attention? Every presentation becomes an opportunity to reinforce the same basic sequence. I see the target, select a precise point, present the pistol, and maintain my attention through the trigger press.

Without the illuminated reticle competing for my attention, I find it easier to build the visual habit I’m actually after. The target becomes the only meaningful source of visual information, and the presentation becomes the act of bringing the pistol to the place my eyes and attention have already selected. Once that behavior becomes more consistent, I turn the optic back on and integrate the dot into the process. The dot hasn’t changed; my relationship with it has.

The Window Principle

Over time, I developed a simple way to describe this process. I call it The Window Principle. The optic isn’t the destination; it’s the window.

When you drive a car, you don’t stare at the windshield. You look through it toward the road, the turn, the obstacle, or the place you intend to go. The windshield makes that information visible, but it isn’t the object of your attention. A pistol-mounted optic should work much the same way.

The window exists so I can see the target, while the dot tells me where the muzzle is pointed. The target is the destination. When we begin looking at the optic instead of through it, we’ve reversed its purpose. Even the word sight may encourage some shooters to treat the dot like an iron front sight—something that must be consciously inspected and perfected before the trigger can be pressed.

Thinking of the optic as a window changes the mental model. I am no longer trying to ignore the dot, nor am I promoting it to the most important object in my visual field. I am allowing it to provide the information necessary for the shot while keeping my attention on the place where that shot must go. That mental shift has probably done more for my shooting than almost anything else I’ve tried.

One of the most surprising things happened after I began regularly practicing with the optic turned off. When I turned it back on, I hunted for the dot far less because it simply appeared. Nothing magical had happened. I hadn’t trained myself to find the dot; I’d trained myself to find the target.

Once my visual attention was anchored where I wanted the bullet to go, the dot naturally entered the window as the pistol aligned with my line of sight. The more I trusted that process, the less compelled I felt to inspect the dot.

That doesn’t mean I disregard the dot. I still use it to confirm alignment, call the shot, and determine whether the amount of information I have is sufficient for the difficulty and consequences of the shot. The difference is that I use the dot without making it the primary destination of my attention.

How I Practice Today

My practice is divided into three distinct purposes. Roughly half of my dry-practice repetitions are completed with the optic turned off. Those repetitions are intended to develop visual attention, reinforce target focus, and strengthen the habit of presenting the pistol to the exact place I’m already looking.

The remaining dry-practice repetitions are performed with the dot on. During those repetitions, I validate presentation consistency, confirm the relationship between the dot and the target, and practice accepting normal movement rather than chasing it.

Live fire provides the final validation. It tells me whether the habits built in dry practice hold up under recoil, time pressure, changing target difficulty, and accountable performance. This doesn’t mean learning stops when live fire begins. It means I try to build the behavior deliberately in dry practice before asking it to survive a more demanding environment.

Understanding Before Performance

Training the visual system is no different from training any other component of shooting performance. We don’t expect perfect trigger control after one practice session, nor do we expect flawless movement after attending one class. Yet shooters often become frustrated when their attention occasionally shifts toward the dot.

I expect that shift to happen from time to time because I understand why it happens. That understanding doesn’t lower my standards; it gives me a path toward improving them. Once I stopped treating every glance at the dot as a personal failure and started viewing it as a normal response that could be recognized and redirected, my training became more productive and far less frustrating.

Today, I no longer think of red-dot shooting as forcing myself not to see the dot. I think of it as teaching my brain where to direct its attention. The optic didn’t solve my shooting problems, but understanding how my brain processes visual information helped me train more intelligently.

The path to better performance isn’t always found by trying harder. Sometimes it’s found by understanding better. The objective isn’t to make the dot disappear. The objective is to make the target impossible to ignore.
