Active Shooter Readiness
Train. React. Survive.
An active shooter, as defined by the FBI, is “one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area.” These incidents are characterized by their immediacy, unpredictability, and often involve firearms, with no clear victim selection pattern. Unlike mass shootings, which are defined by casualty numbers, active shooter events focus on the ongoing attempt to harm, regardless of fatalities. Over the past two decades, it has become central to discussions about public safety, law enforcement response, and community preparedness.
This video breaks down four core pistol skills that matter in an Active Shooter event. The core skills are surgical head shots, dynamic movement, cover usage and long range hand gunning. The focus isn’t speed for its own sake, but survivability, awareness, and decision-making under pressure. Each skill is framed around real-world use, not range theatrics. The message is clear: fundamentals only work when they’re reinforced under realistic conditions. Timing is a major factor in not only the intended victims survivability, but in reducing the number of victims. An armed response both protects and preserves life. It protects the intended victim and by in so doing those in the immediate vicinity. The takeaway is an intended armed victim responding to defend themselves is both practical and timely.
As a concealed carrier, preparing for an active shooter scenario is a sobering but necessary responsibility. By mastering precision shooting at close range, utilizing cover, shooting on the move, and engaging at extended ranges, you can build the skills to respond effectively. With incidents declining trend, but still claiming lives in everyday locations, consistent training, professional instruction, and a disciplined mindset are the keys to readiness.
