Course Description:
PMO Instructor (404) is a three-day instructor-level pistol-mounted optics course designed to develop instructors who can do more than demonstrate red-dot shooting techniques. The course teaches instructors how to assess performance, identify limiting factors, apply targeted corrections, and validate improvement.

Training moves from PMO system knowledge and zero confirmation into visual processing, presentation, recoil management, extended-distance accuracy, reduced-capability shooting, optic failure, movement, and integrated shooting problems. Students will work from close distances out to 50 yards, using distance not simply as a shooting challenge, but as a diagnostic tool for identifying errors that may be concealed at closer ranges.
The course uses the TRICON ATAT methodology: Assess, Train, Apply, Test. Instructors learn to identify the performance problem before prescribing the training solution, then progressively increase difficulty and retest to determine whether performance actually improved.
Instructor candidates are evaluated throughout the course rather than relying on a single qualification. Eight graded shooting evolutions measure performance across multiple PMO competencies and combine for a 100-point shooting score. A separate 100-point written examination evaluates PMO technical knowledge, visual processing, instructional concepts, diagnostics, and training methodology.
On Day 3, students participate in a three-person coaching evolution using a Shooter, Coach, and Observer format. Each instructor must observe performance, identify the primary deficiency, select an appropriate correction, apply a training progression, and evaluate the result.
This is an instructor certification course. The standard is not exposure to the material. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform, diagnose, develop, and validate PMO performance.
What You’ll Train
- PMO equipment, mounting, maintenance, durability, and system considerations
- PMO zeroing procedures
- POI Mapping from close range to 50 yards

- Grip integrity, trigger control, recoil management, and dot tracking
- Accuracy and accountability at 15, 25, 35, and 50 yards
- Using extended distance to diagnose shooting errors
- Balancing speed, accuracy, distance, and target difficulty
- Strong-hand-only and weak-hand-only shooting
- Occluded, degraded, or failed-optic techniques and alternate aiming methods
- Target transitions and multiple-target problems
- Shooting while moving and from changing positions
- Performance diagnostics and corrective training
- Shooter observation and coaching techniques
Who This Course Is For
- Law enforcement and military firearms instructors
- Agency personnel responsible for developing or maintaining a PMO training program
- Firearms instructors transitioning personnel from iron sights to pistol-mounted optics
- Experienced PMO shooters seeking formal instructor-level development
- Instructors who want measurable standards for diagnosing and improving shooter performance
- Agencies seeking a performance-based PMO instructor certification program
This is not an introductory red-dot course. Students should arrive with an established PMO zero and demonstrate competent pistol handling and shooting skills before attending.
Gear List:

- Duty pistol with a pistol mounted optic* (WML optional)
- 1,500 rounds of training ammunition
- 50 rounds of duty ammunition
- 5 x pistol magazines (8 magazines for single stacks)
- Range attire: long pants, comfortable shirt, athletic shoes and ball cap
- Basic load-out: tactical belt, duty holster (level 2 or 3 retention), magazine pouches, dump pouch & IFAK (optional)
- Wrap around ballistic eye protection
- Hearing protection
- Water, snacks, sunscreen and appropriate inclement weather clothing
- Firearms cleaning kit and quality lubrication
- Notebook, pencil and open mind
*Students using a PMO should have a rough zero. Recommended zero distance is 25 yards for optimal performance, but regardless students must know their impacts at ranges from 0-50 yards.
Course Prerequisite:
Students should be current firearms instructors or personnel with equivalent professional firearms training responsibilities. The course is designed primarily for law enforcement and military personnel.
Students must possess safe gun-handling skills, working knowledge of a pistol-mounted optic, and the ability to demonstrate consistent accuracy from the holster before attending.
Recommended prerequisite performance should include:
- Safe and efficient presentation from a duty or approved retention holster
- Demonstrated accuracy at 10 and 25 yards
- Competency with strong-hand-only and weak-hand-only shooting
- Ability to perform emergency and speed reloads
- Familiarity with PMO zeroing and basic optic maintenance
Students unable to demonstrate prerequisite-level gun handling or shooting proficiency may be unable to successfully complete the graded instructor-level evaluations.
The suggested drills are minimum skill requirements to meet the prerequisites. All drills are shot using duty pistol with pistol mounted optic from the holster. The recommended target is the TRICON TCT-MK4 available from Action Target or TRICON B8 target.
- Pistol Standard Delta; at the 5 yard line; fire 1 round in 2.5 seconds. Repeat drill firing 2 rounds, 3 rounds, 4 rounds and 5 rounds. Score the target normally, then deduct 10 points for each string completed over the 2.5-second par, must score 120 or higher.
- Pistol Standard Alpha 2; at the 10 yard line, draw and fire 10 rounds (9 reload 1) in 10 seconds. Must be below par and score 80/100 or higher.
- Pistol Standard Bravo 2; at the 25 yard line draw and fire 10 rounds in 20 seconds. Must be below par and score 80/100 points or higher.
