Course Description:

Dynamic Pistol Fundamentals is a one-day pistol course designed to develop the foundational mechanics required to shoot effectively while moving. The course teaches students how to improve mobility, balance, and stability without sacrificing situational awareness, muzzle discipline, or accountable accuracy.
Students will learn to engage targets while moving forward, rearward, laterally, and along linear angles from 5 to 25 yards. Training includes movement mechanics, athletic shooting stance, rigid gun mount, movement-speed variations, acceptable sight-picture theory, trigger control while moving, and sight-misalignment demonstrations.
The course progresses beyond simply walking while firing. Students will learn to draw while moving, control the pistol during changes in direction, perform pivots and turns, and safely engage targets across an asymmetrical landscape.
Close-range shooting emphasizes obtaining enough visual information to guarantee the hit. Longer-range shooting reinforces the tactical imperative to control movement, stabilize the pistol, and confirm the required sight picture before firing.
Every block of instruction follows the Trident Concepts ATPT methodology—Assess, Train, Perform, Test. Students assess their current ability, train to correct specific deficiencies, perform the skill under progressively more demanding conditions, and test their performance against objective standards.
Students leave with improved movement mechanics, greater stability while firing, a clearer understanding of when movement supports or degrades performance, and a repeatable framework for continued development.
Students will train and be evaluated on:
- Establishing an athletic shooting stance and stable gun mount.
- Moving forward, rearward, laterally, and along linear angles.
- Maintaining balance and stability while firing.
- Adjusting movement speed based on distance, terrain, and target difficulty.
- Managing recoil, visual information, and trigger control while moving.
- Applying an acceptable sight picture at close range.
- Stabilizing the pistol and confirming sights at longer distances.
- Drawing safely while moving in multiple directions.
- Performing pivots and turns while maintaining muzzle discipline.
- Engaging targets from 5 to 25 yards while maintaining situational awareness.
Throughout the course, instructors use the Trident Concepts ATPT methodology—Assess, Train, Perform, Test—within a deliberate-practice model. Each training block begins with an assessment followed by focused instruction addressing the most significant technical deficiency.
Drills are conducted in short, focused iterations with immediate coaching. Students apply one primary correction, repeat the task, and determine whether the correction improved performance. Each block concludes with an objective evaluation identifying what improved, what still requires refinement, and how the skill transfers to more demanding movement problems.
Who This Course Is For
Dynamic Pistol Fundamentals is designed for trained pistol shooters who want to develop the fundamental ability to deliver accurate, accountable fire while moving through a dynamic environment.
This course is a strong fit for:
- Law-enforcement and military personnel who carry a pistol in a duty or operational role.
- Armed professionals who may need to move while controlling a threat or navigating an uncertain environment.
- Serious concealed carriers who want to develop capability beyond stationary shooting.
- Shooters with prior formal pistol training who want specialized movement instruction.
- Students who want to improve balance, stability, and pistol control while moving.
- Shooters who want objective standards, direct diagnostics, and measurable improvement.
- Students who want to understand when movement creates an advantage and when it degrades shooting performance.
- Anyone who wants to integrate movement into realistic pistol training without sacrificing safety or accountability.
This is not a beginner pistol course. Students are expected to safely draw from the holster, maintain muzzle and trigger-finger discipline, perform basic reloads and malfunction clearances, and follow range commands in a dynamic training environment.
The course is physically and mentally demanding. Students must be prepared to move repeatedly in multiple directions, change speeds, perform pivots and turns, and shoot from distances ranging from 5 to 25 yards.
Gear List
- Serviceable duty-size or compact pistol in 9mm (red dot sight optional*)
- 500 rounds of reliable training ammunition
- 5 x pistol magazines
- Range attire: long pants, comfortable shirt, athletic shoes and ball cap
- Basic loadout: rigid belt, on the waistband (OWB) holster or duty approved holster, magazine pouches and dump pouch (optional)
- Wrap around ballistic eye protection
- Hearing protection
- Water, snacks, sunscreen and appropriate inclement weather clothing
- Firearms cleaning kit and quality lubrication
- Notebook and pencil
- An open mind and willingness to receive direct coaching
*Students are welcome to use RDS equipped pistols, but must ensure they are properly zeroed. Recommended zero distance is 25 yards for optimal performance, but regardless students must know their impacts at ranges from 0-25 yards.
Course Prerequisite:
Dynamic Pistol Fundamentals is intended for experienced pistol shooters and is not an introductory pistol course. Successful completion of Tactical Pistol 2 or a comparable intermediate-level pistol course is strongly recommended.
Students should possess the ability to:
- Safely draw from a quality belt-mounted holster.
- Consistently present the pistol from the holster.
- Maintain safe muzzle direction and trigger-finger discipline.
- Perform safe reloads and malfunction clearances.
- Maintain acceptable accuracy from 5 to 25 yards.
- Follow range commands while working in a dynamic training environment.
- Safely move with a loaded pistol.
- Receive and apply direct performance coaching.
The following drills represent the suggested minimum performance standards for entry into Dynamic Pistol Fundamentals. Students are strongly encouraged to become familiar with these drills and consistently meet the listed standards before attending. All drills are fired with the student’s primary carry pistol from the holster. All drills are shot from the holster. The recommended target is the TRICON TCT-MK4 available from Action Target or TRICON B8 target.
- Pistol Standard Sierra 5; start at 10 yards, move laterally 2–3 steps and fire 2 rounds, then advance while firing 6 rounds to the body and finish with 2 rounds to the head before crossing the 3-yard line. Score is total time plus 2 seconds per miss; 8/10 hits, including at least 1 head shot, and 9.00 seconds or less are required to pass.
Registration fee does not include any associated range fees.
